Made by Black & Decker, this is an excellent drill for all those who are looking for a cheap, “around the house” model. Even though it certainly won’t help you with heavy construction jobs, the LDX120C 20-Volt is a great device when it comes to simple tasks, like fixing drawers or hanging pictures. Let’s take a more detailed look at its features!
Black & Decker LDX120C 20-Volt weighs around 6,5 pounds (with the battery), and we can safely say that it’s lightweight enough for longer usage. There’s some rubber on the handle, which makes it feel great in hand, and the whole thing is compact enough to fit into those uncomfortable, tight areas easily. We were pleased to find the LED lamp just under the chuck, knowing that the working light is a vital feature to a possible buyer.
Even though it costs around $50, this drill doesn’t come with a NiCAD battery – it has a modern Lithium-Ion one, which is more compact, lighter, and lasts for a longer time. But don’t expect to get two batteries like with the more expensive models, as you will get only one here. Also, the charger you’ll get is regular, not the fast one, and it takes about 4 hours to charge the battery fully.
The LDX120C has the maximum speed of 650 rpm, with 11 different clutch settings and a 3/8″ keyless chuck, which doesn’t maintain a tight grip on the bit and you’ll have to retighten it from time to time. For just 50 bucks, we think that this affordable drill is quite a good deal, even with its few flaws, and you’ll be able to do plenty of drilling and screw-fastening with it.

Next up is one of Amazon’s top-selling cordless drills – DeWalt DC970K-2 18-Volt. You will not get just the cordless drill under $100 – the package also includes two batteries, as well as the charger and a sturdy carrying bag. The whole kit has a very high rating on Amazon, so let’s check what it’s all about.
This 18V drill is surely one of the most professional models for under $100 that we reviewed so far. It has two speed settings (slow one is 0-450 rpm, and the fast one is 0-1500 rpm), as well as the high-performance motor that packs quite a punch, featuring 380 UWO of power. The keyless ratcheting chuck is made of plastic and has a tight grip on the bit. It will withstand any wear and tear, but it’s not as durable as the chucks on DeWalt’s more expensive models.
When it comes to comfort, DC970K-2 feels pretty good in the hand. It weighs 5.2 pounds and is only nine inches long, which means that reaching tight spaces is quite easy with it. We liked the whole look of the device, especially the combination of the yellow and the black color.
The batteries, unfortunately, aren’t the Lithium-Ion ones – you will get the older NiCAD versions (together with the charger), and charging one of them will take approximately one hour. This isn’t such a big problem – you can always charge the second battery while you’re using the first one.
As the package costs around $90, we weren’t expecting to get a hard case for the drill and the batteries and were pleased to find that DeWalt has, at least, included the bag. In our opinion, this kit is an excellent choice for the beginners!

Porter-Cable is an American power tools manufacturer whose products are always noteworthy, and we were happy to get our hands on their newest cordless drill under $100 – PCC606LA 20 Volt.
The first thing to notice about the drill is how small and sturdy it is. We always mention how easy it is to reach the corners and tight areas with compact drills, but this one is a real champion when it comes to that. But even though it’s so small in size, the model has the high-performance motor with 330 UWO of power, allowing the users to easily work on all kinds of surfaces, like wood, plastic, and metal. The keyless chuck is made of metal, which is something we’re always happy to see on the affordable cordless drills. As expected, there are two speed settings, for both the steady and the fast drilling, as well the LED light that will allow you to use the drill in the dark areas.
As we already said, PCC606LA is small in size, which means that it’s easy to carry around. You can even put it on your belt, as there is a belt clip on it. The sturdy grip bumpers can be found everywhere on the model, and one would have to be really clumsy in order to drop the thing.
The battery that comes in the box is, luckily, the Lithium-Ion one, bringing the long-lasting power that you’ll need to get the job done. We would certainly like to see two batteries here, but perhaps it’s better to have one Li-Ion battery than two NiCAD ones. You can always check how much juice is there left on the battery fuel gauge, which is another great feature of PCC606LA.

Even though it comes without any additional products (bits, batteries, or chargers), the Ryobi P271 is still the absolute champion of affordability – you can get it for about $30! Let’s take a closer look at what this model brings for such a low and affordable price.
The first thing to notice here is the balanced and compact design – Ryobi P271 is very easy to carry around without any arm fatigue, as it weighs only three pounds. The keyless chuck is single-sleeve and features the automatic spindle lock mechanism, while the clutch has over 20 position settings and allows the users to get the perfect result with every use. Choosing the right speed is also an easy thing here with the two-speed gear box and one thing that we really liked is the MagTray magnetic holder which provides the users with some extra space for holding screws and bits.
The magnetic holder is not the only good extra feature here – this cordless drill also has a spirit bubble, which can be found on the top part of the drill. This, of course, will help you to keep the drill steady while working with it.
Unfortunately, there is no LED light here – you will have to bring a flashlight when working in the dark areas.
As we already said, the unit comes without a battery, but it is compatible with all ONE+ 18 Volt batteries. It is possible to buy the drill together with Ryobi’s Li-Ion battery and a charger, and in that case, the whole package would cost you about one hundred bucks. But if you already have ONE+ 18 volt battery and a suitable charger – Ryobi P271 is an excellent choice.

Black & Decker’s LD120VA cordless drill is yet another affordable model that we decided to take a look at, as it has a high rating on Amazon and is one of the best-selling drills on the market right now. This is, actually, a kit – the buyer doesn’t get just the drill with a battery and a charger, but also more than 30 accessories like the nut drivers, screw driving bits, and the magnetic bit tip holder.
The drill itself is quite an exceptional tool. It weighs 4,7 pounds, putting it in the compact category (>5 lbs) and has a rubber grip on the handle. Like most of the compact drills, the LD120VA can also be easily used in tight areas. When it comes to raw power, this affordable model brings us 300 in/lb of torque and speeds from 0 to 750 rpm, as well as 24 different clutch positions.
Just like the name of the model says, the battery that comes with it is a 20-volt Lithium-Ion battery. One of its best features is that when it’s not used, holds the charge for over 15 months, which is a big plus.
Unfortunately, there’s no LED light on the drill, and we think that Black & Decker really shouldn’t have cut production costs at the expense of losing such a simple feature.
The kit comes with a load of different bits, allowing you to immediately put your new drill to use – it’s something we really like to see in this price category. With a warranty period of 2 years and 30 additional accessories, we consider the Black & Decker LD120VA to be a pretty good deal.
Benefits and Flaws of Cheaper Cordless Drills
Like all other products, the cheap cordless drills have their good and bad sides – this might sound simple, but the whole process of buying such a tool might be really confusing to a DIY novice. Should I consider giving more money and buying one of those expensive models? Or will this $50 drill be good enough for my needs?
The cheaper cordless drills usually come with less power and fewer features than their pricey cousins. Their batteries are usually the NiCad ones (not always, as you can see in our reviews) instead of Li-Ion ones, their chucks are made of plastic instead of metal, they have fewer speed settings and a smaller number of clutch positions, and, finally, they usually come with less additional accessories – like the second battery or sometimes even the charger.
But, on the other hand, some cheaper models are almost as good as the pricey ones, and there’s simply no point in buying the deluxe model since the cheaper one will do the job in the same way. The extra money that you would spend on the high-range model could, instead, be spent on the affordable accessories for it – like the bits or the extra batteries.
Final Words – Our Verdict
In our opinion, the cordless drills that come at prices under $100 are certainly worth checking out. Not everyone needs a professional cordless drill for huge Do-It-Yourself projects, since most of the people just want to do some basic repairs around the household – like fixing the broken drawer or hanging the picture on the wall. These cheaper drills are just fine for such tasks, but we would advise you to take a look at high-range models if you’re going work on some heavy-duty projects. You will need good build-quality and lots of motor power for that.
DEWALT DC970K-2 is an example of a cheap cordless drill that’s still totally comparable to more expensive models – it comes with two batteries, a charger, and a bag, and it’s powerful enough to help you finish any task that you’ve started. Be sure to check out our review of it!
